Manchester Town House
A structured, planting-led redesign inspired by the timeless geometry of a parterre garden. Strong underlying structure is softened by layered planting, creating a garden that feels calm, elegant and easy to live with. Designed for clients seeking beauty without high maintenance, the space balances architectural clarity with seasonal planting that evolves throughout the year.
Formal box hedging defines the layout, introducing rhythm and clarity reminiscent of traditional parterre gardens. The evergreen structure provides year-round presence, creating a strong framework that allows the planting to soften the space while maintaining a sense of order and refinement.
Clean lines and considered proportions create a feeling of quiet sophistication, while layered planting introduces movement, texture and seasonal variation. The design allows the garden to feel established from the outset, whilst continuing to develop character over time.
Planting was selected to provide interest across the seasons. Tall tulips, planted in autumn, emerge in early spring bringing vertical rhythm and fresh colour. Alliums introduce sculptural form and gentle movement, while agapanthus provides elegant structure and late summer interest.
A sunny seating area was designed as a place to pause and enjoy the garden, framed with fragrant planting to enhance the sensory experience. Trachelospermum jasminoides (Star Jasmine), with its glossy evergreen foliage and delicate white flowers, brings softness and gentle fragrance to the space during warmer months.
The result is a garden that feels calm, structured and effortlessly elegant, a contemporary interpretation of a classic parterre, designed for enjoyment rather than maintenance, and created to look beautiful throughout the year.
